New Growth on Low Ground
Asphalt paving in Los Fresnos means building for growth on some of the lowest ground in the county. The town grew from 5,542 residents in 2010 to 8,114 in 2020 and sits at about 23 feet above sea level. Its roots are in irrigation: Lon Hill, who also started Harlingen, formed a company in 1912 to build a canal system watering farmland from the Rio Grande, and a post office followed by 1915. The name comes from the fresnos, ash trees once scattered in the woods and along streams.
New driveways
Much of the 2,695 housing units counted in 2020 are recent. New driveways here need a base deep enough to stay above wet ground and a grade that sends water to the street. We build both into every job.
Low ground, slow drainage
At 23 feet, Los Fresnos drains slowly after heavy rain. Asphalt edges that sit in water break down. We extend compacted base past the edge and point out where sprinklers and downspouts are soaking the pavement.
Businesses
New shops and offices along the main roads need lots built for delivery traffic and striped with the right number of accessible spaces.
Permits
Approaches on city streets are handled by the City of Los Fresnos; state highways by TxDOT.
Costs
HomeGuide lists new asphalt driveways at $5 to $12 or more per square foot. On low ground, extra base can add to that, and we show it as its own line.
