Driveways That Stay Flat on Clay
Asphalt driveways are the most common paving job we do in Harlingen, whether that is a first driveway for a new house, a replacement for one that has broken apart, or paving over an old caliche drive. The signs that a driveway needs replacing rather than patching are easy to spot: cracks running in every direction like alligator skin, wheel ruts, low spots that hold water for days, and edges breaking off into the lawn. All of those point to a base that has lost its strength.
Clay changes the recipe
The clay soils common around Harlingen hold water, drain very slowly and crack wide open when they dry out. When the ground moves, a driveway built on a thin layer of rock moves with it. So the first part of any driveway we build is underground: excavating soft or organic soil, placing crushed base, and compacting it in layers. As a starting point we use HomeGuide's ranges: six to eight inches of base for car traffic, eight to ten for heavy vehicles, with two to four inches of asphalt on top depending on load. Where the subgrade is especially soft, we go deeper and tell you why on the quote.
Slope and water
A flat driveway on flat ground holds every rainstorm. We grade new driveways so water heads to the street or a side swale, keep the surface below the garage threshold, and make sure downspouts do not empty onto the pavement edge. With September averaging close to 6 inches of rain in Harlingen, this is not optional.
Caliche and gravel drives
Older and rural properties often have caliche or gravel. If the existing material is firm and well compacted, part of it can become base, which keeps cost down. Sections that have rutted, gone soft or washed out are dug out and rebuilt before paving.
Finishing details
The edges and the joints decide how a driveway looks after five years. We feather the asphalt into the garage slab, make a clean joint at the approach, and support the outside edges with compacted base that extends past the asphalt so they do not crumble.
The first months
In summer heat, the new surface stays soft for several days; HomeGuide suggests waiting 3 to 5 days to park. For the first few weeks, avoid turning wheels while stopped and keep jacks and kickstands off the surface. Plan the first sealcoat after the asphalt has cured, typically 3 to 6 months.
Approaches and curb cuts
If the job includes a new or widened approach at the street, the City of Harlingen permit guide lists driveway approaches and curb cuts as permitted work. We sort that out before the job is scheduled.

Asphalt Driveways Questions
Can you pave over my old asphalt driveway?
Only if the base is still sound. If the driveway has alligator cracks, ruts or soft spots, a new layer on top will crack in the same places. We check before recommending it.
How long does a driveway job take?
Tear-out and base work usually take a day or two, and paving a residential driveway is typically done in one day. Then plan a few days before parking in hot weather.
What makes clay soil a problem for driveways?
Clay shrinks when dry and swells when wet. Local clay series are described by the USDA as cracking open for much of the year. A deeper compacted base spreads the load and bridges that movement.
Do you build driveways for new homes in Harlingen?
Yes. We can coordinate with your builder on timing so the driveway goes in after heavy construction traffic is done.
